Ninth Sitting of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region

At the sitting held on 27 February, the members of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region discussed the significance of the media for information on the status of the diaspora and Serbs in the region and information of Serbs in the region and the diaspora on the situation in the mother state.


The sitting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Culture and Media, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Directorate for Cooperation with the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, as well as representatives of media in Serbia and Serbian media in the region dealing with information on the status of the diaspora and Serbs in the region and information of Serbs in the region and the diaspora on the situation in the mother country.
Dr Janko Veselinovic, Chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, stressed that the ties between Serbia and its nationals in the diaspora and the region should be constant and unbreakable. Mutual appreciation and respect and constant communication between the mother country and the diaspora and Serbs in the region are important prerequisites for mutual assistance and understanding, said Veselinovic. It is Serbia’s role and national interest to help protect the identity, language and script of Serbs living outside of Serbia, as well as raise awareness and foster ties between the public and Serbs in the diaspora and the region, stressed the Committee Chairman. Veselinovic also pointed out that 4.5 million Serbs live in the diaspora and their status varies from country to country.
State Secretary at the Ministry of Culture and Media Sasa Mirkovic and Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs Dragan Momcilovic presented their respective ministries’ activities relating to the relationship between Serbia and Serbs in the diaspora and the region. Representative of the Directorate for Cooperation with the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Nikolina Milatovic Popovic spoke about the information services for Serbs in the diaspora and the region, and representatives of the media in Serbia and Serbian media in the region also addressed the assembly.
Following a long debate on how to improve the flow of information to Serbian citizens on Serbs in the diaspora and the region and the diaspora on the mother country, the members of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region formulated conclusions.

The sitting was chaired by Dr Janko Veselinovic, Committee Chairman.
