In the course of her official visit to the US, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic met with member of Congress and until recently Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

The officials conversed in a friendly atmosphere. Nancy Pelosi emphasised her positive impressions of Serbia's overall progress. She opined that the National Assembly Speaker’s visit to the US Congress coincided with an important moment for Serbia, making it all the more significant. Nancy Pelosi underlined that the US would continue to support Serbia’s road to democracy as well as its efforts on joining the EU.

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic was grateful for the US Government's support of Serbia’s EU path. She stressed that future parliamentary cooperation between the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and the US Congress would prove important for raising bilateral relations to a higher level, adding that women parliamentarians are a resource to reckon with.

The National Assembly Speaker reaffirmed that Serbia would not recognise the independence of Kosovo, stressing the importance of continuing the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue. Djukic-Dejanovic said that she expected the US to use its influence to ensure the success of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, as well as to support Serbia’s EU accession.

Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic also met with Anita Botti, Chief of Staff of the US Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues. She supported the idea of the Women’s Leadership Network project. She stressed the importance of the existing female engagements in the spheres of political participation, corporate business and reduction of domestic violence. Anita Botti described the meeting with the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia as a wish to build partnership on all these issues. She went on to declare women more interested in these issues, better negotiators who should, therefore, be encouraged to participate more in social trends.

Djukic-Dejanovic thanked the US Government for the support in the realisation of the idea of the Women’s Leadership Network. She stressed that women are a resource to reckon with, adding in that context that in the current convocation the National Assembly adopted a Gender Equality Law, Anti-Discrimination Law and Law amending and modifying the Law on the Election of Deputies.
