National Assembly Speaker Visits Chongqing

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic, heading the parliamentary delegation in visit to China, visited Chongqing. Djukic-Dejanovic stressed that the Chongqing authorities have emphasised the great potential for parliamentary and economic cooperation with Serbia, particularly in the fields of infrastructure, railway revitalisation, thermal power plants and agriculture.

The Chongqing parliament speaker Chen Guangu and president of the city’s China Development Bank Guo Dung informed the Serbian delegation of the intention to invest about 30 billion USD in the world in the upcoming period. “This sum may significantly influence the Western Balkans’ and Serbia’s economic position”, said Djukic-Dejanovic emphasising the importance of the Kostolac Thermal Power Plant which was the topic of the meeting between the Serbian and Chinese side.

The National Assembly Speaker stated that these were still just information about the potential investment by the China Development Bank into Serbia and preliminary negotiations and that she hoped that Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic, as the president of the Serbian part of the Joint Inter-state Commission for Trade and Economic Cooperation with the People's Republic of China, when he visits China, would realise some of the agreements and sign some contracts.

Djukic-Dejanovic emphasised the importance of parliamentary cooperation with the Chongqing city district, boasting a population of 32 million and an area slightly smaller than Serbia. The city of Chongqing, the region’s cultural centre with a developed car and metal industry, is situated on a peninsula, at the confluence of rivers Jialing and Yangtze and is one of the most populous cities in the world.
