The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic received the Prime Minister of Montenegro, Igor Luksic, in his first official visit to Serbia.

Speaker Djukic-Dejanovic wished Igor Luksic success in his performance of the duty of Prime Minister and strengthening cooperation between the two countries particularly on the level of competent ministries and governments because, as she said, they hold, among other things, the economic cooperation in their hands.

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia emphasised the importance of the two countries’ parliamentary cooperation, particularly in the preparation of laws which would improve the citizens’ economic status and in ratifying a series of treaties, agreements and state acts of international and interstate importance. Djukic-Dejanovic also listed the National Assembly’s activities aimed at strengthening its oversight role and stressed the role of the parliament in Serbia’s accession to the European Union.

Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic expressed hope that the disputed issues between the two countries, though she agreed with Igor Luksic that the interstate relations were on the rise, would be addressed wisely, in stages and in the interest of the citizens of Serbia and Montenegro.

Montenegrin Prime Minister Igor Luksic said that there is mutual support on the road to European integration and that the European Union membership is the two countries’ common goal. Serbia’s European perspective should give a positive impulse to the countries in the region aimed at completing the EU enlargement process, said Luksic. He stressed that Montenegro is also in the process of harmonising domestic legislation with the European and this is a crucial year for it.

Igor Luksic stressed that interparliamentary cooperation is an important bond between the two states. He emphasised the importance of improving economic cooperation, particularly in the sphere of infrastructure.
