National Assembly Speaker Meets with UK Ambassador

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic met today with the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Edward Ferguson, to discuss the improvement of bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries.

The officials talked about the possibilities to continue to foster economic and investment ties, as well as strengthen the partnership in the fields of infrastructure and modern technologies, pointing out the role the two parliaments play in the above. Also, they jointly assessed that the current meeting in Davos, with the participation of the President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic and numerous meetings with the highest international officials, is of great importance for Serbia, as well as the whole world.

Ambassador Ferguson expressed readiness to continue working together after the constitution of the new legislature of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and the election of the new Government. Dr Orlic stressed that it is quite clear what kind of policy the Assembly next legislature’s will pursue. "With 1,800,000 votes won, which is 150,000 votes more than in the previous parliamentary elections, an absolute majority of mandates in the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia for the state policy pursued in previous years and headed by the President of Serbia, has been secured. The inviolable will of the people and convincing support for the policy of Serbia’s further strengthening and development has been expressed. We will work even harder to make our results even more convincing in the years to come - in the economy, infrastructure and all other areas," said Speaker Orlic.

He used the opportunity to inform the Ambassador about the situation in the southern Serbian province and the latest plans of Albin Kurti to cancel payment transactions with central Serbia. "In this way, Kurti is literally announcing that he is going to openly persecute Serbs, with the obvious intention of completely destroying the dialogue. Everyone should show responsibility and say that this is unacceptable. Dialogue, preservation of peace and stability for all is the only correct path," said Dr Orlic, stressing that Kosovo-Metohija demonstrated the people's plebiscite support for President Aleksandar Vucic in the December elections. "The result in the form of 75% of votes for President Vucic's policy is the clearest indicator of who the people trust, who protects our country and who protects peace," said Dr Orlic.

In the course of the conversation, Ambassador Ferguson expressed his support for the dialogue, stressing the importance of Serbia’s role for economic development, connectivity and stability in the entire region. He expressed the expectation that the total volume of trade will exceed the previous year’s record results, as well as the belief that Serbia will prove to be a successful host of EXPO 2027.
