National Assembly House Hosts Students’ Parliament Session as Part of Children’s Week

Today, the National Assembly House hosted a session of the students’ parliament as part of Children’s Week, traditionally celebrated, as every year, in the first week of October.

The session was attended by primary and secondary school students from 25 Serbian towns, representatives of student parliaments, parent-school councils, teachers’ associations, civic associations, members of the Committee on the Rights of the Child and other concerned MPs, as well as media representatives. The topic of this year’s students’ parliament session was preservation of reproductive health.
The session was opened by Ljiljana Lucic, Deputy Chairperson of the Committee on the Rights of the Child, who said that the students’ parliament session provides an excellent opportunity to discuss the observance and promotion of children’s rights. She stressed that all the institutions of the system are responsible for the protection and promotion of children’s rights, with the National Assembly and the Committee on the Rights of the Child playing an important role in the process, by setting up the legislative framework necessary for the improvement of the situation in the sphere.
In the introductory part of the session the participants were also addressed by representatives of the organisation Friends of the Children of Serbia, Union of Secondary School Students of Serbia, and Mirjana Rasevic of the Institute of Social Sciences lectured them on youth education for the protection of reproductive health.
At the students’ parliament session the participants discussed the importance of reproductive health, health risk factors and exchanged opinions on the introduction of sexual education into schools.

Children’s Week, an event with a long tradition in the world and in Serbia, is held with the support of the organisation Friends of the Children of Serbia, under the patronage of the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Policy.
