National Assembly Deputy Speaker Elvira Kovacs Meets with Italian Ambassador to Serbia

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the European Integration Committee Elvira Kovacs met today with Italian Ambassador to Serbia Luca Gori.

Deputy Speaker Kovacs said that now, that after the constitution of the National Assembly and the election of the Government, and with the local elections being over, Serbia has a big job ahead of it. She said she expected Serbia to have a longer period of continuity, without electoral processes, which will enable the country to continue with the reforms and the process of European integration.

She added that one of the priorities in this legislature of the National Assembly will be the intensification of parliamentary diplomacy, especially after the elections for members of the new European Parliament. Kovacs pointed out that Serbia hopes for the opening of cluster 3 and the support of the Hungarian presidency of the EU Council, especially as regards the European agenda for the Western Balkans, which our country sees at the very top of the EU's priority list. She also pointed out that the Serbian Government is almost done with the drafting the reform agenda, which will soon find itself before the European Integration Committee and be put to a public hearing.

Italian Ambassador Gori said how pleased he was with the formation of the new Serbian National Assembly legislature and Government, which paves the way for continued cooperation at the level of the parliaments of the two countries. In the conversation, he emphasised the importance of parliamentary diplomacy for improving relations between countries and announced the visits of Italian officials, which will focus on the parliamentary dimension of cooperation between Serbia and Italy. He added that Serbia has Italy’s full support on its European path, as well as for the opening of negotiation cluster 3, however, the process will not be easy, bearing in mind the attitudes of all the EU member states. That is why he called for the intensification of parliamentary diplomacy and expressed his country's readiness to support Serbia in this regard.

Deputy Speaker Kovacs informed Ambassador Gori about the first steps of cooperation with the Italian colleagues with whom she recently exchanged opinions on the European path of Serbia, as well as the entire region, and said that the strengthening of this kind of cooperation among parliamentarians, not only through international organisations, but on a bilateral level as well, should be intensified as much as possible. She also said that the formation of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Italy in the National Assembly is expected in the near future.

The officials also exchanged opinions on the results of the vote for the new composition of the European Parliament.
