National Assembly Delegation to PACE Meets with Head of Russian Embassy Political Department

The members of the National Assembly delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) met today with the Head of the Political Department of the Russian Embassy in Serbia Mikhail Generalov to discuss current PACE topics relating to the Republic of Serbia.

The Head of the National Assembly delegation to PACE Biljana Pantic Pilja informed the guest in detail about the latest decisions made at the recent meeting of the PACE Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy, stressing that the situation is not at all favourable for country, especially bearing in mind that Serbia's position is weakened by the absence of the Russian delegation in PACE. She said that regardless of procedures, rules and compliance with international law, a decision is being prepared to accept so-called of Kosovo into the Council of Europe (CoE), as well as that Serbia will consider all options and will not be without an answer or reaction to the position other CoE member countries. Also, Pilja said that there is no disagreement on this issue in our delegation and that the stances of its members are united.

Mikhail Generalov expressed ample understanding for the situation Serbia is in and regret that the Russian Federation does not have the legal means to oppose it. He said that there have been negative changes in the EU as well as in the CoE, which unfortunately will continue in his opinion. He, with full appreciation of the current situation and the pressures to which Serbia is exposed, requested the support of the Serbian delegation in PACE regarding the frozen Russian assets abroad.

The Head of the National Assembly delegation to PACE pointed out that she and delegation member Dunja Simonovic Bratic have always provided support to Russia in PACE, which it can count on in the future as well.

The officials also discussed the possible drawing of parallels between Serbia and Russia in the CoE and PACE, with delegation member Dunja Simonovic Bratic pointing out that, for us, the issue of Kosovo-Metohija is a state-building issue and that Serbia will use all international law mechanisms available to protect its interests to the fullest.

The Head of the Political Department of the Russian Embassy in Serbia wished the Serbian delegation good luck at the coming PACE meetings, repeating his country's position regarding the integrity of the Republic of Serbia, which the members of the standing delegation thanked him for, stressing that Kosovo-Metohija is an integral part of the Republic of Serbia.

The meeting was also attended by Aleksandar Mirkovic and Vladimir Djordjevic, members of the National Assembly delegation to PACE.
