NARS Speaker Talks to Azerbaijani President

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic talked today to the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, in official visit to Serbia.

In a very cordial and friendly atmosphere the officials briefed one another on the two countries’ most important activities. The National Assembly Speaker said that she believes the visit historic from the aspect of relations between Serbia and Azerbaijan.

President Aliyev expressed pleasure at being in Serbia and the fact that numerous cooperation treaties important for the development of the strategic partnership between Serbia and Azerbaijan had been just signed, emphasising the importance of establishing an intergovernmental commission on economic and political relations.

He was especially pleased to have the opportunity to ceremonially open the reconstructed Tasmajdan Park which symbolises mutual friendship. The decision of Baku authorities to build a monument to Nikola Tesla in the capital is also a confirmation of continued dynamic cooperation.

Speaker Djukic-Dejanovic expressed gratitude for the principled attitude regarding Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty which reveals respect for international law.

President Aliyev informed the Speaker of the upcoming meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Countries saying that, at the meeting, Azerbaijan would object to any further recognitions of Kosovo-Metohija. Considering the fact that Serbia is not a member of the organisation Azerbaijan will take it upon itself to protect Serbia’s interests regarding Kosovo and Azerbaijan’s regarding Nagorno-Karabakh.

Both sides noted that the relations between the two parliaments should be improved as they can significantly contribute to the further improvement of bilateral relations, particularly through the cooperation of assembly bodies and the existing friendship groups in both parliaments.

President Aliyev extended an invitation to Speaker Djukic-Dejanovic to visit Azerbaijan, and the NARS Speaker asked President Aliyev to convey an invitation to the Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker to pay an official visit to the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia.
