Meho Omerovic Addresses Conference on International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women
The Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Policy organised a conference to mark 25 November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, titled “Due diligence in combating violence against women in Serbia.
On the occasion, he said that violence against women is not a private problem that should be kept within the family suffering from it, but a public problem because it is a violation of human rights. Domestic violence cannot be tolerated, it is a criminal offense which needs to be sanctioned and punished. He also stressed that a lot has been done as far as the legislation regulating the sphere is concerned. He mentioned some of the most important laws passed: the Criminal Code, Family Law, Anti-Discrimination Law and Gender Equality Law.
He also highlighted the significance of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women ratified by the National Assembly on 31 October 2013, stressing that its implementation would contribute to a more efficient social response to this big problem and inspire and encourage women to report violence.
