Meeting of Foreign Affairs Committees of Serbian and Slovak National Assemblies

The Chairman and members of the Foreign Affairs Committee met with the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly of the Slovak Republic Marian Kery.

Committee Chairman Borko Stefanovic emphasised that one constant of our national and foreign policy is the closest possible fraternal relations with the Slovak Republic. That is why it is vital to additionally intensify interparliamentary cooperation, as well as economic cooperation, he said and sent a message to Slovak investors that they are more than welcome in Serbia.

Stefanovic thanked the Slovak Government for its principled stance and not succumbing to the pressures of the European Union regarding the preservation of Serbia's territorial integrity. It is important that the Serbian side remains hopeful that all open issues between Belgrade and Pristina would be resolved through dialogue, but that the recognition of so-called Kosovo and its membership in the United Nations are not an issue open to discussion.

The officials also discussed Serbia's membership in the European Union. Stefanovic stressed that Serbia needs concrete dates and entry of the entire Western Balkans into the EU.

"We need something concrete and we need it now," emphasised Stefanovic.

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly of the Slovak Republic Marian Kery expressed surprise at the length of the process, stressing that Serbia, as well as the entire Western Balkans, have Slovakia's full support on this path. He believes that the EU is a good project and that it can bring a lot of benefits to Serbia, adding that Slovakia is ready to help Serbia reach this goal.

Speaking about Kosovo-Metohija, Kery pointed out that Slovakia respects international law, stressing that it was violated by the unilateral declaration of Kosovo's independence, as well as reminded the attending that the same also happened in 1999, when the then Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was bombed.

Foreign Affairs Committee Deputy Chairperson Marina Ragus thanked Slovakia for its principled support of Serbia’s territorial integrity, stressing how highly Serbia appreciates it and would never forget it, especially since, as a member of the EU and NATO, it suffers a lot of pressure because of it. She went on to mention that Serbia has honoured all the points of the Brussels Agreement, which is not the case with the other side, but that she still expects the negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina to continue.

"Our goal is peace, stability and political dialogue," concluded Ragus.

The Committee members and MPs who spoke at the meeting, Dubravka Filipovski, Ugljesa Markovic, Dunja Simonovic Bratic, Natasa Jovanovic, Nemanja Joksimovic, Nikola Radosavljevic and Haji Milorad Stosic, thanked Slovakia for its decision to firmly defend international law and give Serbia strong support in the process of resolving the issue of the status of its southern province. They also pointed out the danger that can arise from so-called of Kosovo’s possible membership in the Council of Europe. They called for strengthening economic cooperation by connecting Slovak and Serbian businessmen with a view of improving foreign trade cooperation.

The officials also discussed the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with everyone hoping that it would soon be ended through dialogue.

In light of the exceptional relations between the two countries, the officials agreed that the Slovak national minority is an important bridge connecting Serbia and Slovakia, with Kery expressing hope that Slovak naive art from Kovacica would be included in the list of Serbia's intangible cultural heritage.
