Marinkovic and Representative of Azerbaijan Institute for Democracy and Human Rights

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Prof. Dr Vladimir Marinkovic met with Ahmad Shahidov, representative of the Azerbaijan Institute for Democracy and Human Rights, to discuss organizing a conference on human and minority rights and democracy in the first quarter of next year.

Ahmad Shahidov asked the representatives of the National Assembly to support the Azerbaijan Institute for Democracy and Human Rights which is planning to open an office and have a conference supported by the relevant authorities and NGOs. Considering the historical similarities between the two countries Shahidov said he would like the conference to take place in Belgrade.

Prof. Dr Vladimir Marinkovic briefed Shahidov on the composition of the National Assembly stressing that the Republic of Serbia fully supports human and minority rights as guaranteed by its Constitution. He also said that the Republic of Serbia is home to 26 national minorities which have their representatives in the National Assembly and added that the National Assembly’s own Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality tackles any and all current issues. Marinkovic said that he would inform the MPs about the Institute’s intention which he has no doubt would garner support and lead to closer cooperation.
