MPs Talk to Italian Anti-Corruption Agency Chief

Nedjo Jovanovic, member of the Committee on the Judiciary, Public Administration and Local Self-Government, and Olgica Batic, President of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) National Branch Executive Board, met with Italian Anti-Corruption Agency Chief Raffaele Cantone, at the National Assembly.


The officials discussed the National Assembly’s role in the judiciary reform and fight against corruption, the relationship between the National Assembly and the Anti-Corruption Agency and the harmonization of national legislation with the EU acquis.
Judiciary, Public Administration and Local Self-Government Committee member Nedjo Jovanovic stressed that the judiciary reform has yielded positive results, especially in ensuring institutional independence. Mr Cantone was particularly interested in the National Assembly’s role in the election of bearers of judicial office and the procedure for their election.
Speaking of the National Assembly’s role in the fight against corruption, Executive Board President Olgica Batic informed the guests about the goals of the GOPAC Serbia National Branch. She stressed that, in addition to its legislative role, the National Assembly’s control role is of great importance in the fight against corruption. One of the key tasks of the GOPAC Serbia National Branch is to control the executive and supervise public spending. In relation with this, Batic mentioned the important project of introduction and development of the public finance supervision portal which should set up a connection between the National Assembly and the Treasury at the Ministry of Finance and enable the MPs to easily and efficiently follow public spending in real time, that is effectively monitor public finances.
The Italian Anti-Corruption Agency Chief also asked about the status and scope of authority of the Anti-Corruption Agency and the relationship between the Agency and the National Assembly. Nedjo Jovanovic and Olgica Batic briefed the Italian guest on the deliberation procedure for independent state bodies’ annual reports, including the reports of the Anti-Corruption Agency, at the National Assembly.
The MPs also spoke of the National Assembly’s intensive activities on the harmonization of national legislation with the EU acquis, especially the duty of every submitter to accompany their bill with a statement of its harmonization with the EU acquis.
