MP Dr Aleksandar Martinovic Meets with Russian Embassy Political Counsellor

MP Dr Aleksandar Martinovic and the counsellor at the Embassy of the Russian Federation agreed that both countries want close economic and political cooperation, as well as cooperation at the level of military security and technology.

MP Dr Aleksandar Martinovic informed counsellor Alena Kudryavtseva about the close ties between the National Assembly and the Russian Duma, adding that the PFG with Russia is the largest in the National Assembly which just goes to prove the two countries’ close relationship. Martinovic thanked Russia for its support of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty as well as in the Security Council. He re-assured the counsellor that the Republic of Serbia does not wish to join NATO and is maintaining its principled stance regarding instating sanctions against the Russia.

Kudryavtseva asked about the internal dialogue on the Kosovo-Metohija strategy announced for autumn, and the city elections expected to take place by March 2018 at the latest. Martinovic said that reconciliation in Kosovo-Metohija is in Serbia’s interest, as is to strengthen the position of Serbs in the province and ensure the exiled Serbs’ return. Speaking of the coming city elections Martinovic stated that their date has not been set but it is very important to maintain Belgrade’s economic development mentioning the Belgrade Waterfront project which employs domestic enterprises as a good example.

The officials also spoke about passing a new Constitution and amending the existing Constitution which will take place only after and if the necessary social and political settlement is achieved which would enable judiciary independence and further harmonization with the EU acquis.

They also spoke about instating a duty-free zone on the territory of the former SFRY which would ease the relations in the Western Balkans and improve the economic situation in the Republic of Serbia and the neighbouring countries.
