Kovacs meets with UK Embassy’s Political Secretary

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Elvira Kovacs met today with the UK Embassy’s Political Secretary William Hopkins.

The topics of the meeting revolved around the European Integration Committee’s mode of operation and future plans, the position of the Republic of Serbia in the Council of Europe, next week’s session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, dialogue on the recommendations concerning the improvement of the electoral process in the Republic of Serbia, as well as potential meetings of Serbian and UK parliamentarians.

Kovacs said that transparency and bringing the work of the National Assembly closer to the citizens of Serbia are currently in the parliament’s focus, as well as the constitution of the Government and conducting the dialogue with opposition parties concerning the improvement of the electoral process, especially in view of the upcoming local elections.

The officials also spoke about the potentials of the future work of National Assembly’s informal bodies so that the parliament may conduct concrete discussions concerning the environment, position of women in politics and the economy which would lead to a closer and better cooperation with non-governmental organisations.

They also talked about the Memorandum of Understanding between the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) signed yesterday at the National Assembly, expressing their belief that the Memorandum would strengthen the ties between the Serbian and UK parliaments, as well as democratic values.
