Kovacs Talks to European Students About Serbia’s European Integration

European Integration Committee Chairperson and National Assembly Deputy Speaker Elvira Kovacs spoke today at the National Assembly House as part of the “Policy Days” programme realised in cooperation between the student organisation European Democrat Students (official student organisation of the European People’s Party) and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation Belgrade.

At the beginning of her address, Kovacs greeted the students, welcoming them to the National Assembly, where they had the opportunity to learn about the history of the edifice. Kovacs stressed that European integration is the Republic of Serbia’s chief strategic foreign policy goal and that the country continues to confirm its commitment to the process of integration into the European Union, as well as to the acceptance of European values and principles.

She said that in the previous period, in terms of Serbia’s European integration the focus was on progress in the areas of the rule of law, media freedom, fight against corruption, respect for minority rights and regional cooperation, but that in the meantime priorities have changed making the process of normalisation of relations with Pristina, as well as the pace of Serbia's approach to the EU's Common Foreign And Security Policy, the topics which the Union insists on the most.

The Deputy Speaker reminded the students that Serbia had started the negotiations in 2014, when it was planned to negotiate 35 chapters, and that the European Commission had then adopted a new methodology for the EU accession process in February 2020, which Serbia officially accepted.

The National Assembly Deputy Speaker and European Integration Committee Chairperson explained to the students the National Assembly’s supervisory and control role, within its competences, the harmonisation of national legislation with the EU acquis, She added that the European Integration Committee is responsible, among other things, for cooperation with the European Parliament and other institutions of the European Union, for the development of cooperation with the committees in charge of European affairs of the parliaments of EU member states, as well as for the development of regional parliamentary cooperation.

With National Assembly Deputy Speaker and European Integration Committee Chairperson Elvira Kovacs, the students talked about a more visible promotion and benefits of the European Union in Serbia, as well as about the positioning of Serbia in international organisations and its foreign policy.
