Kovacs Speaks with Members of Italian Chamber of Deputies

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the European Integration Committee Elvira Kovacs had a video meeting today with the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Italian Chamber of Deputies Giglio Vigna.

The key topic of the conversation concerned the integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union, within which it was assessed that the Republic of Serbia is one of the leading countries in the process.

Saying that the Republic of Serbia has set up a new National Assembly legislature and recently elected the Government of the Republic of Serbia, Kovacs stressed that the policy of these two bodies will be a continuation of the previous work, given the fact that the coalition in the National Assembly has not changed much. She affirmed that the Republic of Serbia’s foreign policy goal remains the process of its European integration and that Serbia is working hard on the adoption and implementation of EU reforms across the board. She underlined that the EU has not noticed this effort lately and as Serbia has not opened a single new cluster for more than two years visibility of the integration process is weakening, even though the European Commission has in the previous two reports pointed out that Serbia is ready to open a cluster 3. She also added that geopolitical changes in Europe have slowed down the process and Serbia is aware that it depends on political decisions and the fact that the Republic of Serbia did not impose sanctions on the Russian Federation, which was the biggest criticism directed at Serbia by the EU. She explained that Serbia was not in a position to do so due to the fact that it knows what consequences the sanctions leave on the citizens, as well as the fact that Serbia is largely dependent on Russian gas. She went on to say that despite these factors, Serbia still wants to progress, together with the entire Western Balkans, which stands for peace and stability. "We are convinced that our European future and good regional cooperation make this possible, both for us and for the surrounding countries. We are the largest country in the region, with the largest and strongest economy," said Kovacs. She added that the adoption of the Reform Agenda is one piece of good news and that Serbia is ready for incentives from the EU, which are vital for this undertaking. She said that the green transition is of great importance for Serbia, that the previous legislature had adopted laws harmonised with the EU acquis and that the next step is their implementation. She said that the plan of National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabic is to make this institution as transparent as possible, as well as maintain constructive dialogue with the opposition. She added that migration is another important topic for all of Europe, with which Serbia has been successfully dealing with, adding that she believes the safety and everyday life of the citizens to be of paramount importance, and the migrants be accepted in asylum centres.

In his conversation with Kovacs, Vigna pointed out that the Italian Chamber of Deputies is preparing to adopt the Resolution on the integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union.
