The Chairman of the Committee on Kosovo-Metohija Milovan Drecun spoke today, at the National Assembly with Jean-Lin Lacapelle, member of the European Parliament and its Committee on Foreign Affairs, about the situation in Kosovo-Metohija, dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, as well as the current political situation in Europe.
Milovan Drecun stressed that Kosovo-Metohija is an important national and strategic issue, not only for the state of Serbia, but for the entire Serbian people. He said that it is extremely important to hear Serbia's position and present credible information and a realistic picture of the situation in Kosovo-Metohija.
Speaking about the competences and work of the Committee on Kosovo-Metohija, Drecun particularly stressed that six years ago, a Working Group was formed to collect facts and evidence to shed light on crimes committed against the members of the Serb and other national communities in Kosovo-Metohija, thanks to whose data an indictment was brought against Hashim Thaçi.
In the course of the conversation, Drecun emphasised that Serbia is committed to a peaceful resolution of open issues in the southern Serbian province and finding a compromise solution that both parties would be satisfied with, with the necessary respect for international law and UN Security Council Resolution 1244. In this sense, the proposal for resolving the Kosovo problem submitted by the advisers of the French President and German Chancellor, which does not require the recognition of the independence of so-called Kosovo, but requires Serbia not to oppose its requests for membership in international organisations, is not acceptable for Serbia, Drecun pointed out, indicating that the membership of so-called Kosovo in the UN would be equal to the recognition of its independence.
The Chairman of the Committee on Kosovo-Metohija also said that the state of human rights of Serbs and non-Albanians in Kosovo-Metohija is unsatisfactory. Serbs are discriminated against by the Provisional Institutions in Kosovo-Metohija, said Drecun, adding that strong anti-Serb rhetoric encourages Albanian extremists to attack Serbs, with over 160 ethnically motivated attacks on the Serbian population and their property being carried out in the past 15 months. Not only have conditions not been created for the return of Serbs to Kosovo-Metohija, but those who remained there are being intimidated, with no reaction from the international community, said Drecun.
Jean-Lin Lacapelle agreed that it is important to know the truth about the events and the current situation in Kosovo-Metohija and that this meeting made it possible to get to know the facts better. He said that he would personally endeavour to present a realistic picture and the results of the work of the Working Group for the Collection of Facts and Evidence for the Investigation of Crimes Committed against Serbs and Other National Communities in Kosovo-Metohija in the European Parliament.
MP Jovan Palalic also attended the meeting, and the officials jointly noted that Serbia is the leader of the region and a key factor of stability in the Western Balkans. Milovan Drecun pointed out the importance of regional initiatives, such as the Open Balkans which has already produced concrete results.
Drecun and Lacapelle also exchanged opinions on the current political situation in Europe, in the context of the conflict in Ukraine.
