Kazakhstan’s Stance on Kosovo-Metohija Grounded in International Law

The members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Kazakhstan met today, at the National Assembly House with a Kazakh parliamentary delegation to discuss the overall bilateral relations between the two countries.

Dragomir Karic, member of the PFG with Kazakhstan, welcomed the Kazakh delegation, praising the two countries’ strong ties of mutual understanding. The 77-strong PFG with Kazakhstan is one of the largest at the parliament he said and went on to highlight the importance of cultural cooperation, adding that there is ample room to expand the admittedly solid economic cooperation.

Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic greeted the Kazakh delegation, emphasizing the long-standing friendship between the two countries, evidenced by the reciprocal visits of their highest dignitaries. He informed the delegation about Serbia’s foreign policy goals, the chief being EU accession, good relationship with the Republic of China, Russia and the US, and resolving the Kosovo-Metohija issue.

Speaking of Serbia’s European integration, Obradovic said that the country has so far opened 16 negotiation chapters, two of which have been temporarily closed.

Speaking of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, Obradovic said that Belgrade has fulfilled all of its obligations under the Brussels Agreement, while Pristina has fulfilled none, certainly not the most important one – establishing a Community of Serb Municipalities. He also said that the Provisional Institutions in Pristina had violated UNSC Resolution 1244 by establishing the so-called Kosovo Army and imposing a 100% customs tax on goods from Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

He thanked Kazakhstan for its support of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty which shows it is a country that respects international law and the basic principles of the United Nations.

Gulzhan Karagusova, Chairperson of the Kazakh Parliament’s Budget and Finance Committee, said that her country is interested in intensifying cooperation with Serbia, as evidenced by the many signed and ratified agreements, among them the free trade agreement. She said that Kazakhstan will stay consistent in its stance on so-called Kosovo and that she believes dialogue to be the only way to resolve the matter.

MPs Vera Jovanovic and Srbislav Filipovic who also took part in the meeting highlighted the two countries’ friendly relations and opined that an exchange of parliamentary visits could help advance interparliamentary relations and boost trade and economic cooperation.
