Head of PFG with Cuba and Cuban Ambassador Discuss Continuation of Cooperation

The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Cuba Bojan Torbica and PFG member Djordje Komlenski met today in the National Assembly with the Ambassador of Cuba to the Republic of Serbia H.E. Leyde Ernesto Rodriguez Hernandez.

Bojan Torbica said that Serbia and Cuba have a 120-year long tradition of diplomatic relations, characterised by mutual understanding and friendship between the two countries and two peoples. He pointed out that the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Cuba has 44 members and expressed the expectation that successful cooperation would continue, both with the Cuban Ambassador and with the colleagues from the Cuban Parliament.

Torbica said that Cuba has always been on Serbia's side in difficult moments, expressing his gratitude for the country’s firm and consistent position and support of Serbia's territorial integrity and sovereignty. He added that it is of great importance for Serbia that Cuba represents our views in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Ambassador Hernandez informed the hosts about the political situation in Cuba, following the general elections. He pointed out that the previous two years were difficult, bearing in mind the pandemic caused by the corona virus, as well as the increased US sanctions against Cuba. He opined that Serbia and Cuba share similar historical experiences of struggle for the preservation of territory and national identity and culture, thanking Serbia for its support and advocacy at international forums for the lifting of sanctions against Cuba.

The officials agreed that the political and diplomatic relations between our two countries are at a high level, but that it would be of mutual interest to intensify cooperation in the fields of economy, medicine, science, culture and tourism, in which the initiatives and commitment of the members of the Serbian and Cuban parliamentary friendship groups and working bodies can play a significant role.
