Guinea-Bissau Parliamentary Delegation Visits National Assembly

A delegation of the Parliament of Guinea-Bissau, currently in official visit to the Republic of Serbia, met today at the National Assembly House with the members of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality and the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee to exchange experiences concerning the organization and operation of the two countries’ parliamentary working bodies.


Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic said that the diplomatic relations between the two countries, dating back to 1975, leave ample room to improve bilateral and parliamentary cooperation, especially in the field of economy. Obradovic opined that the scholarship system for students from the Non-Aligned Movement member states helps further strengthen the ties between the two nations.

The Guinea-Bissau delegation spoke about the scholarships for Military Academy students with Defence and Internal Affairs Committee Chairperson Marija Obradovic. Obradovic said that Serbia is committed to maintaining peace and security in the region which makes in a factor of stability in the Balkans. They also spoke about the status of Kosovo-Metohija which, Obradovic stressed is a difficult issue for Serbia and considerable efforts are being invested into resolving the decades-long problem. That is why any support and help from friendly countries is more than welcome, and the head of the Guinea-Bissau delegation Amizade Fara Mendes said that his country would continue to support Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and respect international law.

The Guinea-Bissau delegation also spoke with members of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality about combating violence against women domestic violence and discrimination, about gender equality and national minority rights, as well as the migrant crisis. Deputy Chairperson of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Maja Videnovic and Committee members Milanka Jevtovic Vukojicic and Ljiljana Malusic explained how the Committee operates at the parliamentary level and its cooperation with the state authorities, local self-governments and the civil society to monitor the implementation of the laws and map human rights problems which should be addressed.

The officials also spoke about the visibility of women on the political scene and the operation of the two parliaments’ women’s networks, and MP Suzi Carla Barbosa said that Guinea-Bissau had just passed the proportionality law which should ensure that 36% of the MPs are women, adding that the current legislature has 14 women among its 103 MPs.
