Gojkovic at IPU Forum of Women Parliamentarians

At the 137th Inter-Parliamentary Union session in Saint Petersburg today, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic took part in the Forum of Women Parliamentarians and on the occasion stressed that equality is one of the fundamental tenets of the Republic of Serbia and gender equality and equal opportunities for women and men are the most basic democratic principles of our Constitution and laws.

Gojkovic said that in the last five years Serbia has achieved significant results in the field thanks to the new laws, making women more visible, equal and represented in many segments, but also added that despite all this women should not rest on their laurels but must understand that the implementation of the principle of gender equality requires constant efforts.

The National Assembly Speaker said that the Serbian Parliament, in addition to the key laws in force, had amended the criminal, labour and family legislation to improve the fight against violence against women and women’s status, having also adopted the National Gender Equality Strategy and with it introducing the principle of gender-responsive budgeting for the first time.

“The legislative framework is implemented consistently and is visible in the Republic of Serbia. The Serbian Government is headed by a woman. The President of the Constitutional Court is a woman, and so is the Governor of the National Bank. As you see the Speaker of Parliament is also a woman”, said Gojkovic reminding the Forum that the Parliament also has the Women’s Parliamentary Network, and that 91 of 250 MPs are women, unlike in 2000 when only 20 of the parliamentarians were female.
