Gojkovic Meets with President of Parliamentary Assembly of Mediterranean

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic had a meeting today with the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean Pedro Roque where the officials stressed that importance of promoting parliamentary cooperation among PAM member states to tackle and overcome regional and global challenges such as migration and terrorism, and improve economic, trade and cultural exchange between the countries of Europe, Africa and the Middle East.


The National Assembly Speaker highlighted the importance of Roque’s visit to Serbia as the first by the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean since its foundation, stressing that Serbia is dedicated to strengthening cooperation with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean and its member states, as evidenced by the Serbian delegation’s serious efforts and participation in PAM’s activities and the fact that Serbia is to host the PAM plenary session in 2019.

The National Assembly Speaker said that some of the important issues the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean deals with are also Serbia’s foreign and domestic policy goals such as combating organized crime and terrorism, migrations, fostering international law, protecting cultural monuments.

Gojkovic and Roque agreed that Serbia’s fair and humane treatment of and solidarity with the migrants is a positive example, while the National Assembly Speaker pointed out that Serbia was especially attentive to the needs of the vulnerable groups such as women and children mentioning that about 700 migrant children have started elementary school this school year and 500 teachers were trained to work with them.

The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean said that he supports Serbia’s efforts to join the European Union, stressing that he believes the accession would be beneficial for the EU itself.

Gojkovic and Roque also spoke about the international parliamentary organization’s plans and activities and emphasized the importance of the coming conference on migrants scheduled to take place in November on Malta and co-organized by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean and the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
