Gojkovic Meets with President of Cyprus

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic met today with the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, currently in official visit to the Republic of Serbia.


Gojkovic and Anastasiades agreed that the traditionally good relations based on historical closeness and friendship between the two nations could be improved in a number of areas.

Gojkovic said that the Cypriot people had always had understanding for the Serbian people and its history of hardship, adding that parliamentarians as the representatives of the people share the feeling of true friendship.

The National Assembly Speaker thanked the President of Cyprus for the consistent and principled support of Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and support during so-called Kosovo’s attempt to join international organizations and institutions, reminding him of the difficult situation the Serbian holiest sites are in on the territory of Kosovo-Metohija.

The President of Cyprus said that the friendship and close ties between the two nations demand stronger cooperation at all levels, stressing that the best results could be achieved by frequent contacts and meetings.

Anastasiades thanked Serbia for supporting Cyprus and upholding principles and laws, stressing that the country’s stance on Kosovo-Metohija would not change and that there is no way that Cyprus would recognize the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo-Metohija.

Anastasiades said that his country also supports Serbia’s Euro-integration, recognizes the hard work it has been doing to achieve this and that Cyprus is ready to share its experience and help Serbia become part of the EU family.

Gojkovic thanked Cyprus for the active and unwavering support of Serbia’s European integration efforts and the belief that the country belongs in the EU family, stressing that the Cypriot Parliament’s experience is invaluable for the Serbian Assembly which plays and important role in this demanding process.

Gojkovic said that the coming visit of Cypriot Parliament Speaker Demetris Syllouris would be an excellent opportunity to discuss advancing cooperation across the board, adding that the parliaments do enjoy admirable cooperation at the multilateral level in a number of international organizations.
