The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic, currently attending the 5th Conference of Danube Region Parliaments in Budapest, met today with Hungarian Parliament Speaker László Kövér.

The officials agreed that the two countries’ bilateral relations are at a historic high and that they would continue to deepen cooperation across the board.

Gojkovic stressed that EU accession is Serbia’s number one foreign policy goal, one the country would welcome a helping hand from its friends on the path to achieving it.

Gojkovic thanked Hungary for its support of Serbia’s European path, saying that the country expects the negotiating process to pick up speed during the Austrian and Romanian presidencies and stressing that the support of friendly countries such as Hungary is of paramount importance, that Serbia is Europe and should be a part of the EU.

Kövér said that Hungary will continue to support Serbia’s Euro-integration, hoping that new chapters would be opened soon.

Gojkovic and Kövér urged to intensify cooperation between parliamentary committees such as those in charge of foreign affairs, European integration, agriculture, economy, security, as well as delegations to interparliamentary organizations and friendship groups.

Gojkovic briefed Kövér on the situation in Kosovo-Metohija, stressing that Serbia is committed to dialogue and finding a compromise solution.

The Serbian Assembly Speaker thanked Kövér for accepting the invitation to pay an official visit to Serbia, opining that it would be an excellent opportunity to continue cooperation.

Gojkovic also met with Slovenian Parliament Speaker Dejan Zidan. The officials stressed that the two countries relations are developing nicely but that there is room to step up the dynamics and intensity of parliamentary cooperation.

Gojkovic thanked Slovenia for its support of Serbia’s European integration, hoping that Slovenia would remain consistent in its support for accelerating the region’s EU accession process.

Gojkovic stressed that regional cooperation is a priority for Serbia and invited the Slovenian Parliament Speaker to pay an official visit to Serbia before the end of the year.
