Gojkovic Meets with Georgian Prime Minister, President and Foreign Minister

On the second day of her official visit to Georgia, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic met with Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili, President Giorgi Margvelashvili and Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mikheil Janelidze.

The officials agreed that there is ample potential for bilateral cooperation between Serbia and Georgia, especially in the field of economy, and it would be good to encourage Serbian and Georgian business people to cooperate and invest. The National Assembly Speaker’s visit to Georgia as the first visit at the highest parliamentary level in the history of relations between the two countries opens a new chapter of cooperation between Serbia and Georgia.

Gojkovic said that Serbia is determined to advance and strengthen cooperation, as well as establish regular political dialogue, and had agreed with the Chairman of the Georgian Parliament Irakli Kobakhidze to intensify cooperation in order to help further the overall relations between the two friendly countries.

Gojkovic and Prime Minister Kvirikashvili agreed that the existing economic cooperation falls short of its potential, being characterized by lacking trade, and it would be good to look into boosting it.

Gojkovic said that Serbia is working hard to improve its economy and investment climate, as evidenced by the recognitions in the area of competitiveness and improved business environment, and the National Assembly stands ready to help promote bilateral relations by ratifying any agreements the two governments sign, such as the recently signed trade agreement.

Gojkovic and Kvirikashvili commended the idea to set up a direct flight as it would improve the connection between the two countries, cooperation between their business people and help develop tourism. The National Assembly Speaker and the Georgian Prime Minister also spoke about the economic and educational reform underway in both countries, as well as their European integration efforts since both Serbia and Georgia are striving to join the EU.

Prime Minister Kvirikashvili thanked Serbia for its support of Georgia’s territorial integrity, stressing that Serbia will always have Georgia’s unwavering support regarding Kosovo-Metohija.

Gojkovic and Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili agreed that it is important to abide by international law and the principle of territorial integrity and sovereignty of internationally recognized states. Gojkovic thanked Georgia for its principled support and non-recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo-Metohija, as well as never voting against Serbia’s interest in international organizations, stressing Serbia’s appreciation of Georgia’s vote against Kosovo-Metohija’s attempt to join UNESCO. The National Assembly Speaker reaffirmed that, in line with international law and the principle of territorial integrity of internationally recognized states, Serbia supports Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Speaking of the situation in Kosovo-Metohija, Gojkovic stressed that Serbia insists on discovering the culprit behind the assassination of Oliver Ivanovic, an alarming act that shook both Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija and Serbia as a whole. Gojkovic said that Pristina needs to abide by the tenets of the Brussels Agreement, first and foremost the establishment of the Community of Serb Municipalities.

In the meeting with Georgian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mikheil Janelidze, the Serbian Parliament Speaker said that Serbia is grateful for the visa abolition and is ready to expand cooperation across the board by signing new agreements and treaties. Gojkovic and Janelidze said that the two countries are both willing and ready to improve cooperation in the fields of tourism, education and culture.
