Gojkovic Chinese National People's Congress Chairman Zhang Dejiang

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic met today with the Chairman of the Chinese National People's Congress Zhang Dejiang, at whose invitation she is visiting China, and the two officials agreed that Serbia and China’s firm ties are characterized by trust, mutual understanding and support and intensive development of overall cooperation.


Gojkovic said that, through geographically distant, Serbia and China are connected by a friendship confirmed time and again through history and recently lent additional momentum through the comprehensive strategic partnership and the vision of the two presidents, Xi Jinping and Aleksandar Vucic, and Zhang Dejiang said that the deep traditional friendship had stood the test of time making Serbia and China firm friends.

Gojkovic and Zhang said that the successful visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Serbia in 2016, when the relations were raised to the level of overall strategic partnership and Serbia became China’s first partner of this kind in the region of Central and Eastern Europe, was historic, and Zhang stressed that the Chinese side is ready to continue to deepen the overall trust and cooperation between Serbia and China in the creation of a faithful community for all of humanity.

Under the auspices of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Serbia and China, Gojkovic and Zhang signed the Protocol on the establishment of the Commission for Cooperation between the National Assembly and the Chinese National People's Congress, a joint parliamentary body. The parliamentary commission will meet regularly to discuss topics of mutual interest and inspire cooperation within the One Belt One Road initiative, as well as create the right legal and political environment to better coordinate the two countries' development strategies, as well as strengthen coordination their work on coordinating the efforts to champion causes of mutual interest in international parliamentary organizations.

The two heads of parliament applauded the intensifying economic cooperation, and Gojkovic said she expected even more direct investments from China in the coming period. Gojkovic and Zhang highlighted the importance of the Belt and Road projects and China-CIES format of cooperation. Zhang said that the Belt and Road initiative launched by Chinese President Xi Jinping had been met with wide interest and has already yielded good results, adding that China is ready to continue to deepen its cooperation with Serbia via these platforms. In that context, Zhang emphasized the importance of commencing project Belgrade-Budapest high-speed railway, the construction of the new bloc in Thermal Power Plant Kostolac and stressed that the Chinese company would continue its capital and technological investments into Smederevo Steel Works. Gojkovic said that Serbia fully supports China’s project of cooperation with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the Chinese initiative Belt and Road with its historic character and importance and the fact that it is in interest of all involved and better global connection.

Gojkovic and Zhang emphasized the importance of cultural and touristic cooperation, mentioning the abolition of visas and the new direct flight between Belgrade and Beijing as very important for the development of cooperation in these areas.

The National Assembly Speaker took the opportunity to congratulate China on the recent 19th CPC Congress which confirmed the success and impressive results China has achieved under Xi Jinping’s leadership in all areas of development, and stressing that Serbia, as a true friend of China and its people, as very pleased by its achievements.

Gojkovic also talked with the Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Yu Zhensheng and stressed that Serbia and China support one another in all key political issues of national interest and thanked China for its firm support of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty i.e. non-recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo-Metohija. The Assembly Speaker said that Serbia truly appreciates China’s support during Kosovo-Metohija’s attempts to join international organizations.
