Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption National Branch Founded

Today, the National Assembly House hosted the founding meeting of the National Branch of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC).

The GOPAC National Branch is a non-partisan parliamentary group currently gathering parliamentarians from all the parliamentary groups at the National Assembly with the goal of fighting corruption and promoting transparency and accountability in order to ensure high standards of integrity in public affairs. In the course of today’s founding meeting the participants agreed that the priorities of the GOPAC branch in the Republic of Serbia should be overseeing the Government’s work i.e. public finance.

The participants of the founding meeting were addressed by the National Assembly Speaker MA Nebojsa Stefanovic, representative of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) in Serbia William Infante and the founder and honorary President of GOPAC John Williams.

The participants of the founding meeting unanimously adopted the GOPAC National Branch Founding Charter and elected the GOPAC National Branch Executive Board.

Zoran Babic was elected President, Olgica Batic was elected Vice-President and Stefana Miladinovic Secretary of the Executive Board.

Addressing the participants of the founding meeting, Zoran Babic stressed that only strengthening the system of institutions can make the fight against corruption sustainable. The National Assembly is the first line of defence in the fight and we will do our utmost to stem corruption by strengthening this institution and using the Assembly’s control and legislative function, said Babic.

Congratulating on the foundation of the GOPAC National Branch, Zoran Stojiljkovic, professor at the Faculty of Political Science, at the end of the meeting, presented the analysis of GOPAC goals and the Activity Plan proposal for the GOPAC National Branch.

The foundation of the GOPAC branch in Serbia was supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Serbia office, thanks to a donation of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) as part of project Strengthening the Oversight Role and Transparency of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia.
