Forty-Third Sitting of the Committee on Defense and Security

The Committee on Defense and Security held a sitting today, which was, according to the Committee’s decision, closed to the public.

The sitting was convened at the request of seven members of the Committee on Defense and Security, with the proposal that it debates the defense of the southern Serbian province of Kosovo-Metohija.

The Committee decided to hold the sitting without the presence of the public considering that the seriousness of the topic required a more comprehensive insight into the security situation and a complete report to the Committee on the latest developments at the administrative crossings of Jarinje and Brnjak.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairman Dusan Bajatovic, and attended by Ivica Dacic, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Dragan Sutanovac, Minister of Defense, General Miloje Miletic, Chief of the General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces, Sasa Vukadinovic, Director of the Security-Information Agency, General Svetko Kovac, Director of the Military Security Agency, Brigadier General Dragan Vladisavljevic, representative of the Director of the Military Intelligence Agency and Milorad Veljovic, Police Chief.

The following conclusions were adopted at the sitting:

- We condemn the unilateral moves and all violence occurring on the territory of Kosovo-Metohija;

- We expect KFOR and EULEX to ensure the safety of the Serbian people in Kosovo-Metohija, as well as to remain status neutral in line with the mandate given to them by the United Nations;

- We call for cessation of violence so as to create conditions conducive to the continuation of the negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina;

- We demand the implementation of an urgent and independent investigation by the United Nations to establish the facts relating to the attack of 27 September 2011 on the members of the Serbian people at the administrative crossing of Jarinje;

- The Committee on Defense and Security of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia fully supports the state authorities of the Republic of Serbia in employing dialogue to reach a compromise and historic reconciliation between the Serbian and Albanian people.
