Foreign Affairs Committee Members Meet with Ghanaian Parliament Speaker

The members of the Foreign Affairs Committee met with the Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana Aaron Michael Oquaye, currently in official visit to Serbia.

Committee Chairman Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic said that the visit of the Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana provides an excellent basis for the development of bilateral relations between the two countries at the political and economic level.

Obradovic briefed the Ghanaian Parliament Speaker on Serbia’s foreign policy positions. He said that the country’s priority if EU accession as well as maintenance of good and friendly relations with China, the Russian Federation and the USA. He also said that Serbia intends to renew and develop relations with the countries of the Non-Aligned Movement. Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic said that Serbia is ready for a compromise resolution of the Kosovo-Metohija issue.

Aaron Michael Oquaye said that history of the two countries serves as a reminder of all the challenges the countries and their people had overcome. “Stability and human rights are essential for a country’s development and we want to bring back and revive the ideas of the Non-Aligned Movement,” said the Ghanaian Parliament Speaker. Oquaye stated that foreign policy is the instrument for the improvement of the economic and overall relations between the two nations, adding that Ghana is rich in resources it can offer the world, such as raw materials and natural resources, but lack the experts to place a finished product onto the market.

The officials agreed that there is ample room for cooperation in the fields of infrastructure, economy, food industry, energy and education.

The meeting was also attended by Committee members Dr Milorad Mijatovic, also a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, who said that Ghana can count on Serbia’s full support in the IPU, and Ljiljana Malusic who spoke about the representation of women at the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and the informal Women’s Parliamentary Network and the ways it helps to improve the status of women in Serbia.
