Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Meets with UK MP

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee met today, at the National Assembly House, with UK MP Andrew Bridgen, currently in visit to Serbia.

Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic said that the visit is very important for the improvement of interparliamentary cooperation and establishment of the group for cooperation with Serbia at the House of Commons which MP Bridgen is to head.

Zarko Obradovic spoke about the good diplomatic relations with the UK dating back to 1837, impaired in the 1999 NATO bombing and following the recognition of the self-declared state of Kosovo. Obradovic said that parliamentary cooperation had been intensified in the last five years as evidenced by an exchange of tip-tier visits.

Speaking of the situation in Kosovo-Metohija Obradovic said that Serbia is committed to dialogue with Pristina and the Brussels Agreement signed in 2013, which the other side has so far failed to abide by.

MP Andrew Bridgen agreed with Obradovic that dialogue is the only solution and that Serbia is key for peace and stability in the Western Balkans. Bridgen said that big powers in the European Union are prejudiced against Serbia which should be overcome in view of the fact that Serbia has in the last years achieved significant progress in its talks with the EU and in the sphere of economy.

The Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman said that EU accession is Serbia’s number one foreign policy goal and the country has so far opened 12 negotiation chapters, two of which have been temporarily closed, and added that Serbia is also dedicated to maintaining good relations and cooperation with the Russian Federation, PR China and the USA.

MP Bridgen briefed the Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman on the course of UK’s negotiations to leave the EU stressing that this by no means diminishes the country’s support of Serbia’s EU efforts.

The officials discussed different options for advancing interparliamentary cooperation, for example via reciprocal visits, and the advancement of economic cooperation and trade. Bridgen opined that the presence of UK banks in Serbia would attract more foreign investments.
