First Meeting of Informal Green Parliamentary Group

The National Assembly House hosted the first meeting of the informal Green Parliamentary Group, comprising 25 MPs from the National Assembly’s many parliamentary groups.

At the first meeting the members of the Green Parliamentary Group signed a Charter stating that they are obliged to launch environmental initiatives at the local, regional and national level, include the public in the decision making process and promote the implementation of the values and principle of sustainable development.

The Group members also took the unanimous stance that crime against nature should be sanctioned. They had many suggestions about how to improve the state of the environment such as construct windbreak zones and reinstate the Environmental Protection Fund. They also underlined the importance and role of local self-governments in environmental protection.

In addition to the MPs, members of the Green Parliamentary Group, the meeting was also attended by the Director of the Belgrade Fund for Political Excellence Sonja Licht and Milos Djajic of the Centre of Modern Skills. They highlighted the importance of passing suitable laws and by-laws as the crucial step toward changing individual and collective awareness on the significance of environmental conservation.
The Green Parliamentary Group was set up in cooperation with the Belgrade Fund for Political Excellence and Centre of Modern Skills, with the support of the Balkan Trust for Democracy, in November 2009. The Group started working again in January 2013.
