Fifth Sitting of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee

At the sitting held on 12 December, the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee considered the Ministry of the Interior Activity Report for the period April to June 2012 and the Ministry of the Interior Activity Report for the period July to September 2012.

Presenting the reports, Ivica Dacic, Prime Minister of the Serbian Government and Minister of Interior, declared the security situation in Serbia stable, adding that the safety of state officials was not jeopardized. According to him, Serbia is fighting organised crime and corruption and will not be stopped by any threats.

In the course of the debate, Dacic also answered the Committee members’ questions which mainly related to the eavesdropping scandal on top state officials, media announcements of arrests and ties between crime and members of the police. The Ministry of Interior stressed that a system needs to be established which would thwart abuse and prevent eavesdropping not only on state officials but the citizens as well. He said that he was displeased that the media announces who is to be arrested and asked who would be held responsible if somebody leaves the country. Dacic said that some police directorates are doubtlessly influenced by crime and the Internal Control Service should seriously tackle the issue.

Following the debate the Committee unanimously endorsed the two reports.

The sitting was chaired by Dusan Bajatovic, Committee Chairman.
