A delegation of the European Integrations Committee headed by Chairman Laslo Varga met today at the National Assembly House with a delegation of the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, headed by the Director of the Unit for Europe Information, Roberto Tanzi-Albi.

The Finnish guests talked about the experiences their country gained in the European integration process, focusing on the aspect of informing the public about it. Director Tanzi-Albi stressed that Finland started the process of accession to the EU in 1993 when a network of public information centres on the advantages of joining the European Union was founded in each of the 20 provinces. These units were tasked with informing the public about the complex system of EU institutions and their mode of operations. In addition, they developed web presentations, printed publications and organized a network of seminars on the advantages of joining the EU. Also, a new subject – European Integration, was introduced into the education system. The referendum on Finland’s Accession to the EU, which had a positive outcome, was conducted in 1994, and Finland is now part of the European information system.

Director Tanzi-Albi pointed out the important role of the parliament in the approach to the European Union, not only in the adjustment of domestic legislation to EU legislation, but in informing the public about the significance of integration. He also said that Finland supports the idea of EU expansion to include Western Balkan countries and wished Serbia success on its path.

The Committee members stressed that Serbia started its road to European integration in 2000 and that the Serbian Government formed an Integration Office to deal with “European business”, such as communicating with the public regarding these issues. Also, a National Strategy for EU accession was adopted providing the basis for the implementation of specific measures and activities.

They stressed that two thirds of Serbian citizens are in favour of Euro-integration and expressed an opinion that, even in the conditions of economic crisis and indications that Europe is tired of further expansion, the EU should justify their expectations by its actions.

Donka Banovic and Jelena Trivan also took part in the talk.
