European Integration Committee Meets with Polish Sejm Delegation

The members of the National Assembly’s European Integration Committee, headed by Committee Chairperson Elvira Kovacs, met today with a delegation of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland headed by the Chair of the EU Affairs Committee Kacper Plazynski.

At the very beginning of the meeting, Kovacs thanked Poland for supporting Serbia’s European integration, stressing that the enlargement process must not disappear from the Union's focus, regardless of the current events on the European continent. She then spoke of the Committee’s control role over the work of the Serbian Government and its role in the National Assembly and international institutions.

Plazynski thanked the Committee Chairperson for the invitation, emphasising the importance of parliamentary contacts and bilateral cooperation, also taking the opportunity to express condolences, along with the delegation members, on the recent tragedies in Serbia. Kovacs said that the National Assembly is currently discussing items directly related to the tragedies in "Vladislav Ribnikar" elementary school in Belgrade and in the area of Smederevo and Mladenovac - in Malo Orasje and Dubona, and expressed the view that these tragedies should not be laughed at or politicised in any way.

Plazynski informed the Committee of Poland's ambitious plans concerning energy transition and offered cooperation in this area, given that both countries are dependent on energy sources such as gas and coal. Kovacs added that Serbia has started a strategy of diversification of energy sources, but this process is very expensive and complicated, and will, in addition to funds, also require time for its implementation. Plazynski said that the EU is preparing a seven-year budget for green energy sources, which represent the future and stability of energy supply. The head of the delegation said that he had had a meeting with the Polish diaspora living in Serbia and expressed gratitude for the way Serbia treats its national minorities. Kovacs said that Serbia has a good legislative framework concerning this issue and had in 2022 held direct elections for members of 23 national minority councils.

Responding to her Polish colleague interest, she spoke about the results achieved in the area of human and minority rights, media freedom and the fight against corruption, as postulates of the EU, as well as the effects of geopolitical changes in Europe and the requests to align Serbia’s foreign policy with the Union’s and the negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina which are slowing down the EU integration process. Plazynski said that he has noticed that the Kosovo-Metohija issue is a vital one for the citizens of Serbia, adding that he would continue to respect the decisions and efforts invested in the negotiations.

The officials also discussed the results Serbia achieved in the field of judiciary - its independence and depoliticisation, as well as the issues of media freedom and public and private media services.

The officials also exchanged opinions on the last Council of Europe Summit, agreeing that bilateral cooperation can be even stronger, especially in the field of economy and culture.

European Integration Committee Members Milos Radin, Ksenija Markovic, Ana Miljanic and Dunja Simonovic Bratic also took part in the meeting.
