European Integration Committee Meets with Bundestag Members

The members of the European Integration Committee met today with members of the Bundestag Committee on European Union Relations to discuss Serbia’s European integration process.

Committee Chairperson Elvira Kovacs stressed that discussing all open issues with German colleagues is of vital importance and reminded them that the majority of the members of the National Assembly’s European Integration Committee are in favour of Serbia joining the European Union, but that it is increasingly difficult to maintain the citizens’ enthusiasm and motivation, when there has been no progress for almost three years on the European path. She added that the Committee is working intensively on checking the compliance of domestic legislation with EU legislation and informed the guests about the dynamics planned for the coming period. Kovacs also added that in the current National Assembly legislature, parliamentary diplomacy will be further strengthened and the members of the Committee are trying to contribute to the country's European path through various formats. Speaking about the European Commission's Report on Serbia's progress, she pointed out that though it is objective, many things have been evaluated very strictly and added that the European Integration Committee will do everything within its power to meet the parliament’s priorities.

Members of the Bundestag EU Relations Committee Tomas Hacker and Josip Juratovic pointed out the importance of a wide-ranging dialogue with all political actors in Serbia, especially on a bilateral level with fellow parliamentarians, on topics of mutual interest such as the rule of law, media freedom, electoral legislation and more. They emphasised the importance of cooperation in the region, preserving peace and stability, and expressed their support for Serbia's European path, with the hope for greater involvement of MPs, as the elected representatives of the citizens, in the Berlin process.

The members of the European Integration Committee Milan Radin and Dunja Simonovic Bratic spoke of the length of the accession process, challenges in the cooperation with colleagues from the European Parliament, as well as the challenging cooperation with German colleagues in parliamentary delegations in international organisations. It was assessed that the European path and membership in the EU is the only possible path for Serbia and the entire region.
