European Integration Committee Meets with Bundestag MP

The members of the European Integration Committee met today, at the National Assembly House, with Bundestag MP Iris Eberl, member of the Committee on the Affairs of the European Union. The meeting was opened by Committee Chairperson Marinika Tepic who welcomed the German parliamentarian and thanked her for Germany’s unswerving support of Serbia’s path to EU membership.

Tepic emphasised the importance of the role the European Integration Committee plays in the consideration of the proposals on the negotiation chapters it received from the Serbian Government as the chief negotiation in the Euro-integration process. She also mentioned the significant step that is the opening of negotiation chapters 23 and 24 hoping that, with a realistic view of the moment and situation, chapters 5, 20, 25 and 26, would also be opened during the Slovak Presidency of the EU Council, wherein the last two might also be closed. She spoke of the migrant crisis as an acute global issue, stressing that Serbia took solidarity as an approach to it and is ready to pursue the same approach in its further resolution.

Bundestag MP Iris Eberl thanked the Committee for the welcome, adding that she was honoured by the considerable turnout. She said she was pleased by the significant presence of German companies in Serbia which she herself witnessed on her travel through Serbia. “It makes me very happy because it shows that Germany has found an interest in investing into Serbia and at the same time contributing to employment among its citizenry”, said Eberl. She was also sure that the conditions for foreign investment would be further improved after the opening of negotiations chapter 23.

Eberl said that Bundestag’s Committee of on the Affairs of the European Union, which she is member of, strives to be objective and as such wishes to see Serbia in the European Union, so she recommended intensifying cooperation between the two committees so as to widen the scope of application of the suggestions and recommendations given to Serbia.

Vesna Markovic, Vladimir Olic and Elvira Kovacs also took part in the discussion. Markovic said it was very important to discuss all current issues which, in her opinion, should be widened to include the fight against terrorism which has reached global proportions. Vladimir Orlic greeted the Bundestag MP on the behalf of the Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee he chairs. “You can rest assured that a definite majority of both MPs and citizens endorses EU accession in light of the message that commended the opening of negotiation chapters – message that Serbia is coming home”, stressed Orlic.

Eberl informed the attending that, on the behalf of her Committee, she had been appointed rapporteur for national minorities and in the course of her visit to Serbia she had met with the German national minority who said they were pleased by the conditions they as a national minority enjoy in Serbia. On the behalf of minority party MPs, Elvira Kovacs informed Eberl about the establishment of national minority councils and the Government’s activities aimed at improving cooperation with national minorities.
