European Heritage Days at the National Assembly

As was the case in previous years, the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia again joined in marking European Heritage Days, held in Belgrade from 9 to 18 September.

As was the case in previous years, the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia again joined in marking European Heritage Days, held in Belgrade from 9 to 18 September.

The central subject of the programme prepared by the National Assembly was 170th anniversary of the adoption of the Sretenje Constitution, the first Serbian constitution.

The Serbian Archives loaned two copies of a reprint edition of the Sretenje Constitution, as well as 13 photocopies of additional documents kept at the Archives. On display are the opening speech of Prince Milos at the Assembly, the authorisations of members of the Sretenje Assembly, the report from the Assembly, the receipt for oats and flour given to Assembly participants, as well as other interesting documents.

Assembly visitors were given the opportunity to browse through a reprint edition of the Sretenje Constitution, and were treated to an explanation of the events leading to the convening of the Sretenje Assembly, and the adoption – and repeal – of the first Serbian constitution, which was in force for a mere 55 days.

The first group of visitors, who toured the National Assembly from 9 to 10 a.m. on 9 September, saw two paintings by Ivan Tisov – Reading the Address and Return of King Aleksandar, both on display at the Press Room.

After a short walkthrough of historic areas, accompanied by a description of events from the reigns of the Obrenovic and Karadjordjevic dynasties, the visitors were allowed into a committee room.

Seated in deputies’ seats, the visitors were shown the film National Assembly – A house of all the people, and took an active part in a demonstration of the electronic voting system.

All visitors were given a brochure on 170 years since the adoption of the Sretenje Constitution of the Principality of Serbia, and the monograph National Assembly – A house of all the people.

As part of European Heritage Days, doors of the National Assembly are open to all interested visitors on working days from 9 to 10 a.m. and from 6 to 7 p.m., and on weekends from 9 to 10 a.m. and from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Visitors should apply at information points of the Belgrade Tourist Association; any additional information can be obtained by dialling 3083-803.
