Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Committee Chairman Visits Serbian Community in Slovenia

The Chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Dr Janko Veselinovic visited the representatives of the Serbian community in Slovenia.


During the visit, 13-15 March 2015, Dr Janko Veselinovic had several meetings with Slovenian officials to discuss possible solutions to the status of the well over 40,000 Serbs living in the country, who still do not have the status of national minority in Slovenia.

On the first day of the visit, the Committee Chairman met with the Chairman of the Slovenian Parliament’s Committee on Culture Dr Dragan Matic, State Secretary at the Ministry of Culture and President of the Slovenian Government Council for Ethnic Communities and Former SFRY Nations’ Issues Anton Persak and the Director of the Slovenian Public Fund for Cultural Activities MA Igor Tersar. On the next day, Dr Janko Veselinovic visited Livade, an elementary school offering additional classes in Serbian, and attended a Solemn Academy, after which he met with MEP Tanja Fajon.

On Sunday, 15 March, Dr Janko Veselinovic attended morning service at the Cyril and Methodius Orthodox Church in Ljubljana, after which he visited the Serbian Association Mihajlo Pupin and its library, which was followed by one more meeting with the representatives of the Alliance of Serbian Associations of Slovenia.

The Chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Dr Janko Veselinovic believes that the meetings with the representatives of the Alliance of Serbian Associations of Slovenia and Slovenian officials have been very useful and important for exchanging views and finding a solution to the status of Serbs in Slovenia.
