Diaspora and Serbs in Region Committee Chairman Meets with Representative of Serbian Community in Hungarian Parliament
The Chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Milimir Vujadinovic and National Assembly Assistant Secretary General Radoslav Vujovic met today with Hungarian MP Ljubomir Aleksov.
The topic of the meeting was the position of the Serbian community in Hungary and the importance of participation of Serbs in the country’s political life.
Aleksov stressed that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is very much in favour of minority communities and that the Serbian community enjoys a special position. He highlighted the incredible progress recorded in the field since 2014 stemming from the exceptional, primarily private relations between Orban and the President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic.
"Serbs have absolutely no objections to their status and to the financing of institutions. In the past six years, budget allocations for national minorities have increased six-fold compared to 2014. We have achieved goals that have been unattainable for decades, not only in the field of education and culture, but also as regards the property issues of the Serbian Orthodox Church," Aleksov pointed out.
From the conversation with Aleksov, Vujadinovic concluded that the position of the Serbian minority in Hungary is at an enviable level and that it can serve as an example to many countries in the region of how they should treat the Serbian community. On the other hand, said Vujadinovic, Serbia is trying to ensure that the position of the Hungarian community in Serbia follows suit. He expressed his belief that the good political relations between Belgrade and Budapest are to thank for everything - good political relations between the two most important people on the political scene of both Hungary and Serbia, President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
"This is especially important for the people who live in the border areas, both Serbs and Hungarians. These relations lie at the core of the entire Balkans, we are witnesses that these political relations significantly affect the position of the Republic of Srpska, because there is no state in Europe today, which is a political ally and views the state of the Serb community in Bosnia and Herzegovina with more objectivity, i.e. the position of the Republic of Srpska, as official Budapest does, and that is of great importance to us", stressed Vujadinovic.
