Defining Priority Sustainable Development Goals

Member of National Assembly standing delegation to Inter-Parliamentary Union and coordinator of the Focus Group for the Development of Control Mechanisms for the Process of Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals Prof. Dr Milorad Mijatovic met with the Deputy Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS Rastislav Vrbensky to brief him on the Focus Group’s activities.

Mijatovic said that the Focus Group comprises 13 members, among them two National Assembly deputy speakers. The National Assembly constantly evaluates the goals to determine the progress of their implementation. The 17 goals are the pillars of sustainable development and the 169 targets are there to facilitate their implementation on the national and local level, said Mijatovic. The Parliament’s objective is to work closely with the Government, demand that it draft a national plan on the Sustainable Development Goals and through the Government’s reports monitor its implementation.

Gordana Comic said that the Sustainable Development Goals should be shifted into the sphere of politics that is, as it became apparent from the Focus Group’s operation, to set up mechanisms to turn the Goals into regulations.

Sanda Raskovic Ivic said that there is always room for potential conflict in the Balkans, but conflicts are resolved by providing decent social standards. “The Sustainable Development Goals are a good recipe for the stabilization of society, the state and region”, said Raskovic Ivic adding that it would be good to foster ties in the region, encourage free flow of people, economy, culture and art to provide a more solid basis for living.

Rastislav Vrbensky said he was happy about the continued cooperation between UNDP and the National Assembly, adding that setting a sustainable development framework would be socially very significant and that the goals unite a variety of policies, meaning that both the ruling majority and the opposition need to work together to achieve them. He said that UNDP will continue to support the Government’s Coordinating Group and that he was pleased to see that the National Assembly is hosting the Regional Seminar on the Sustainable Development Goals for the Parliaments of Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia, as well as with the creation of the portal where everything done on sustainable development so far is readily available.

Mijatovic concluded the meeting saying that the Assembly will justify UNDP’s support with their work and strive to implement the Sustainable Development Goals, among them most importantly poverty reduction, healthy environment, quality education, gender equality, and that the MPs will contribute to the efforts through amendments to laws which will improve the quality of living.
