The Chairman and members of the Culture and Information Committee met today at the National Assembly House with a delegation of the Czech Parliamentary Committee on Science, Education, Culture, Youth and Sport to speak about the traditionally good relations between the two countries and improving interparliamentary cooperation.

Committee Chairman Mirko Krlic greeted the guests taking the opportunity to emphasize the historically good relations and closeness between the two nations, as well as the Czech culture’s contribution to the world and Serbia. Krlic emphasized the importance of preserving the cultural heritage in Kosovo-Metohija hoping that the Czech Republic would change its position in coming vote on the so-called state of Kosovo’s UNESCO bid and vote against it.

Vaclav Klaus, Chairman of the Committee on Science, Education, Culture, Youth and Sport of the Czech Parliament, said that the purpose of the visit is to advance the two countries cultural relations through a variety of events such as the Days of Serbian Culture in Prague and Days of Czech Culture in Belgrade. He also emphasized the importance of opening Czech schools in Serbia in view of the fact that the Czech national minority is quite a large group in Serbia.

Czech Ambassador to Serbia H.E. Tomas Kuchta spoke about the excellent economic cooperation between the two countries, saying that there are lot of Czech investors in Serbia whose presence aided the employment and improved living standards of numerous people.

Committee members Snezana Paunovic, Stanija Kompirovic, Natasa Mihajlovic and Dragana Kostic spoke about the problems of Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija and appealed to the Czech delegation that the country’s high dignitaries reconsider their stance on the repeat vote on so-called Kosovo’s UNESCO bid.
The officials praised the excellent interparliamentary cooperation, evidenced by National Assembly Speaker Maja Gojkovic’s recent visit to the Czech Senate and Chamber of Deputies.

Chairman Krlic thanked the Czech Republic for its support of Serbia’s European integration, saying that in view of the challenges the EU is facing, a strong message of support from a friendly country like the Czech Republic is much appreciated.

At the end of the meeting the officials concluded that it is in both countries’ interest to preserve the cultural heritage and tradition by staging exhibitions, preserving cultural monuments and keeping the memory of historical figures alive.
