Cuban MP and National Hero Visits National Assembly

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Veroljub Arsic met today at the National Assembly with Cuban national hero and member of the National Assembly of People's Power Gerardo Hernandez Nordelo, currently visiting Serbia.

Deputy Speaker Arsic highlighted the long and firm friendship between the two states and their people which have, despite being geographically distant, shared very similar problems throughout their history. He thanked Cuba for upholding international law and keeping a principled stance on the status of the Serbian South Province of Kosovo-Metohija.

Gerardo Hernandez Nordelo and Veroljub Arsic agreed that the constant mutual support and cooperation in international organization is a strong proof of the friendship between Serbia and Cuba.

Gerardo Hernandez Nordelo also met with the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Head and members of the PFG with Cuba.

Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic said that Nordelo’s visit to Serbia reaffirms the traditionally friendly history of relations between the two countries. He added that their economic cooperation, which has ample room for development, should follow the trend of the exceptionally good political cooperation. Obradovic emphasized the similarity between the Serbia and Cuban people connected even by a similar injustice of international politics reaching back to the disintegration of Yugoslavia to the 1999 bombings of Serbia.

Gerardo Hernandez Nordelo said he was grateful for the solidarity and help of friends without which he could not have leaf the federal prison in California after serving 17 years of the two consecutive life sentences he was sentenced two. He asked Serbia to support Cuba and vote that the Resolution against the blockade of Cuba in the United Nations be passed in its original form without the US amendments.

The Head of the PFG with Cuba Prof. Dr Ljubisa Stojmirovic thanked Nordelo for the visit, saying that the two nations share a friendship as well as similar historical experience, and the PFG members voiced their support and belief that the cooperation between the two countries would continue to become stronger with each passing day.

The meetings were also attended by the Cuban Ambassador to Serbia H.E. Gustavo Tristá del Todo, Serbian Ambassador to Cuba H.E. Danilo Pantovic and the head of the Centre for Development of Relations between Belgrade and Havana Dragan Kamenica.
