Cooperation Between National Assembly and CeSID

The National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and the Centre for Free Elections and Democracy - CeSID today signed the Protocol on Cooperation.

The National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and the Centre for Free Elections and Democracy - CeSID today signed the Protocol on Cooperation. It was signed on behalf of the National Assembly by Chairperson Nataša Micic, and on behalf of CeSID by its director Slobodanka Nedovic.

Taking as their starting point and common goal the creation of a democratic society, the National Assembly and CeSID have agreed on that CeSID representatives will observe the work of the Assembly and the Assembly's Committees, as members of other invited organisations already do.

Besides this, the Protocol also establishes cooperation between Serbia's highest legislative body and the Centre in realising CeSID's `Government Up Close` programme. This project aims to acquaint high school and university students in Serbia with the work and prerogatives of the National Assembly, involve them in monitoring its work, and allow them direct contact and talks with Deputies and Assembly officials.

The observation of elected representatives' work by voters makes for transparency of government, an essential characteristic of a democratic system of government, the Protocol on Cooperation states, stressing that acquainting the youngest voters with the structure and functioning of government gives them an incentive to participate actively in the democratic development of society.

Thus, the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and the Centre for Free Elections and Democracy believe that cooperation established by the Protocol may give significant impetus to the creation of a democratic society in Serbia.
