Brnabic: You can do anything you dream of, if you are dedicated and believe in yourself

Today at the closing ceremony of the Girls in ICT Day, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Ana Brnabic said that the parliament will be even more open and urged the participants never to allow anybody to tell them that they cannot do something or that something is not for them.

“This is your home. Thank you for accepting our invitation to celebrate the International Girls in ICT Day here together," Brnabic said at the beginning of her address and thanked all the partners who have been collaborating on the project for years – UNDP, Association of Business Women in Serbia, partners from the EU delegation, ministries of education, telecommunications and information.

Brnabic said that whenever she looks at the solutions presented every year, whenever she goes to a school or a regional training centre, science and technology park, she mostly sees young people who have their own innovative start-up companies, stressing that Serbia has a lot of potential, talent and creativity.

"I want to tell you that we, as the Assembly, will try to open up even more for you, your parents, teachers, professors, mentors, whom we also like to thank for being here with us today and for their effort, work and commitment, so that we can do more of the sort of things like the ones we have today. And at the end of the day, laws are not passed in some isolated space, the laws we pass here concern all of you," said Brnabic.

Brnabic told the attending never to allow anyone to tell them that they ca not do something or that something is not for them.

"You can do anything you want. You can do anything you dream of, believe that if you are committed to it, believe in yourself, work, study, you can certainly do it," said the Parliament Speaker.

Talking to the participants of the meeting, Brnabic said that she noticed that there are those who want to enrol in a grammar school, a military grammar school, medicine, etc., but in the 21st century, information and telecommunication technologies are at the core of all of this.

"From medicine, through energy to, of course, the ICT sector. In any case, you have chosen well, and you serve as a great and good example for many of you, your friends, your peers and also, above all, those who are even younger than you, to dare and follow in your footsteps," Brnabic said.

Minister of Information and Telecommunications Mihailo Jovanovic urged the attending girls to follow their dreams and never allow stereotypes to hinder their careers.

“When I was the Director of the Office for IT and eGovernment, 65% of the engineers employed were women. Thanks to women we digitalised Serbia. They held responsible posts, spearheaded the most important digitalisation projects and thanks to them great results were achieved. It was a privilege to work with them”, said Jovanovic.

Girls in ICT Day is organised as part of the International Girls in ICT Day, which was established at the level of the United Nations.

As part of this manifestation, awards were presented to the winners of the "Catch the Idea" competition, run by the Association of Business Women in Serbia for the ninth year in a row.
