Brnabic: National Interest Should Come First, Political Interest Should Be Secondary

National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabic, said today in Berlin that Serbia should learn from the German example, so that there are no political divisions over issues of national interest, such as lithium mining, but that all parties should support the national interest.

"Let us get to the point where the national interest comes first, and the political interest must always be secondary and must be below the national interest. We can learn from Germany," said Brnabic, who is visiting the Federal Republic of Germany.

She said that she had congratulated German businessmen on Germany being the first European country to start mining lithium in 2026, she said, noting that Germans have two major projects, Vulcan and Zinnwald, and that on June 10, the city of Karlsruhe and Landau City Council approved an additional spatial plan for their lithium mine.

"This is important for Germany, it is also important for Europe, but first of all it is important for Germany. This means greater energy independence for Germany, greater energy autonomy, it means an even stronger German economy and industry. This again means that they will be able to produce everything from batteries to electric vehicles," said Brnabic, noting that project Vulcan is twice as small as the Jadar project in Serbia.

Brnabic said that during her visit to Germany, she had a series of meetings and Germany is interested in the Serbian economy.

As she told journalists in Berlin, her German hosts praised Serbia, its economic growth, development and assessed that what they can see in our country is impressive.

She said that the 2023 exchange of goods hit a record level of over nine billion euros. Brnabic added that she expects this year’s exchange to be even bigger.

The National Assembly Speaker said today she is glad the official Serbian parliamentary delegation staying in Germany for the first time has a representative of the opposition.

"I sent an invitation to all the parliamentary groups to, if they want to be members of my delegation as the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, submit their candidates, to suggest someone," said Brnabic and thanked MP Vladimir Djordjevic for being part of the delegation.

She opined that it is good that parliamentarians can show that they can still have, she said, a minimum level of respect for all the citizens of Serbia, reminding that the parliament represents all the citizens of Serbia, not only the government and the ruling coalition, and concluded that it is good when they can represent all of Serbia.

Brnabic said that previously, for the official visits of the National Assembly Speaker, there were no invitations for opposition MPs to join official parliamentary delegations, which, according to her, she wants to change and noted that it is pointless for some parliamentary groups from Serbia to visit other parliaments without wanting to be part of the official Serbian parliamentary delegation.
