Bozic Meets with UK Prime Minister's Trade Envoy

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Sandra Bozic met today with the UK Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to the Western Balkans Martin Vickers.

The officials discussed parliamentary friendship groups as a special form of cooperation that would be useful to MPs, with the Deputy Speaker expressing her belief that MPs' interest in participating in the work of the PFG in this legislature would be even greater. Vickers emphasised that the number of UK MPs interested in cooperation and contacts with Serbia is growing year by year and expressed his belief that the cooperation will continue, regardless of the upcoming parliamentary elections in the UK.

Bozic used the opportunity to outline the difficult geopolitical circumstances in the region, stressing that it is extremely important to continue with intensive talks through the parliament. She emphasised that it was her duty to acquaint the guest with what the Serbian people are experiencing and suffering through in Kosovo-Metohija. "As an economic expert, you probably know that the dinar is prohibited as our national currency. I assume you know that the ban on trade in Serbian products in the territory of Kosovo-Metohija still continues, and I want to point out that this represents a humanitarian disaster for all the people living in these areas and that it is a continuation of the pogrom and exile of the Serbian people from Kosovo-Metohija. I hope you will understand that if we cannot discuss the same goals, because we know your position on this topic, then let us talk about the fact that things like this cannot happen in the 21st century". She added that situations such as this one must be met not only with condemnation by the international community, but with concrete actions that would prevent this kind of a humanitarian disaster in the very heart of Europe as well. Vickers said he was aware of these tensions and would convey the comments and concerns to London.

The meeting also touched on EXPO 2027 and the open invitation to all companies that want to appear at this event, as an excellent opportunity to strengthen economic cooperation.

The officials confirmed that the two countries enjoy good cooperation in the military industry and the economy, but it is parliamentary cooperation that represents a bridge toward better understanding of different positions and, to the greatest extent, a place where common goals and positions can be aligned.

They also discussed future meetings and possible video meetings, as well as the formation of subcommittees that could cooperate in certain areas.
