Advanced Security and Defence Studies 13th Class Attendees at National Assembly

The Chairman of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee MA Milovan Drecun and the Chairman of the Security Services Control Committee MA Igor Becic met today with the attendees of the 13th Class of the Advanced Security and Defence Studies in the National Assembly House.

The chairmen of the two committees expressed their satisfaction with the continuation of the good practice of organising these visits, during which the students of advanced studies are given the opportunity to better understand the ways of thinking and the needs, on the one hand, of the civil sector, and on the other, of the security sector, as well as the executive on the one and legislative power on the other hand.

The chairmen of the two committees informed the participants about the committees’ control and supervisory role and the specificities of the scope and competences given to them by the law and the National Assembly Rules of Procedure.

Becic and Drecun pointed out that the biggest challenges faced by the committees when supervising the work of the security and defence services are the need to strike a balance between threats to national security and human rights and freedoms, with the simultaneous need to maintain the secrecy of the work of the security and defence services, so as not to reduce their effectiveness in preserving national security. They also pointed out that due its very nature, the work of the defence security services and the work of the parliamentary bodies that supervise their operation, it remains less open and public, even in developed democratic societies, than supervision in other areas of state administration.

The formal completion of the Advanced Security and Defence Studies is hosted by the National Assembly House, and on the occasion, by the Decision of the President of the Republic of Serbia, a replica of a Serbian medieval sword with an inscription is presented to the trainees which had completed the course. The ceremony is traditionally organised in July and the swords are presented by the Minister of Defence.
