50th Sitting of the European Integration Committee

At the sitting held on 26 December the members of the European Integration Committee reviewed the state-of-play of Serbia’s EU accession talks and the Report on the Republic of Serbia EU accession negotiations during the Bulgarian Presidency-in-Office (January-June 2018).

The state-of-play of the talks and the Report were presented by Minister of European Integration Jadranka Joksimovic and the Head of the Negotiating Team Tanja Miscevic. Joksimovic said that four new negotiation chapters were opened at two intergovernmental conferences this year and 2025 was set as the framework date of Serbia’s EU accession. Next year brings a couple of important dates for the Union viz. the formalisation of Brexit in March, the election of the European Parliament in May 2019. She added that chapters 2, 4, 14, 9, 21 and 28 are technically ready to be opened and Serbia has submitted its negotiating position on them, but the opening depends on the member states. The opening of new chapters also depends on chapters 23 and 24 which Serbia had opened in June 2016 are the subject of biannual progress reports. The EU had stipulated that these two chapters need to be opened first so they are crucial for the opening of new chapters. The Minister also said that according to the latest polls in the EU member states, 43% are in favour while 45% are against EU enlargement. Following a discussion, the Committee members accepted the Report on the Republic of Serbia EU accession negotiations during the Bulgarian Presidency-in-Office and proposed that the National Assembly consider and adopt said Report.

The Committee went on to select a delegation to represent it at the summit of chairs of the Conference Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs of Parliaments of the European Union (COSAC), 20 - 21 January 2019 in Bucharest. The Committee will be represented by MPs Gordana Comic and Zarko Micin.

The Committee also selected two members for the interparliamentary conference on “Communication with the citizens: Developing a comprehensive parliamentary communication strategy” organized by the European Parliament in Brussels on 29 January 2019 viz. Elvira Kovacs and Vesna Markovic.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairman Nenad Canak, and attended by the following Committee members and deputy members: Dr Muamer Bacevac, Ivana Nikolic, Haji Milorad Stosic, Vesna Markovic, Dragan Sormaz, Olivera Pesic, Zvonimir Djokic, Zarko Micin, Elvira Kovacs, Dubravka Filipovski and Dr Aleksandra Jerkov.
