The sitting of the Culture and Information Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia held on 24 March 2006 saw the unanimous endorsement of the Report of the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance on the implementation of the Act on Unrestricted Access to Information of Public Importance.

Presenting the Report, the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance, Rodoljub Sabic, said that the greatest problem in implementing the Act was the lack of an efficient means of monitoring its implementation. The supervisory role was entrusted to the Ministry of Culture, which has, however, failed to provide a supervision service – a view corroborated by Ministry officials. The Culture and Information Committee resolved to ask the Government of the Republic of Serbia to prepare amendments and modifications to the Act on Unrestricted Access to Information of Public Importance whereby supervision would be entrusted to a ministry with the capacity to perform it. It was suggested that the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government should take on this role.

Committee members accepted Mr Sabic’s proposal to nominate Stanojlo Mandic, currently secretary of the Commissioner’s Support Service, for the post of Deputy Commissioner for Information of Public Importance. The Committee is to propose to the National Assembly to elect Mr Mandic to the post.

The sitting was chaired by the Committee’s chairperson, Aleksandar Lazarevic, and attended by officials of the Ministry of Culture.
